| I've never read a book in Spanish because I do not know the language, but I would seriously recommend the film 'Pan's Labyrinth' (which is in Spanish but I watched with subtitles) which was very good and is said to be one of the best films ever made. | I'll give you my perspective which is as a parent of a 16 yr old boy, a 22 yr old married daughter and as an adult adviser on a couple of Teen advice sites. IMO teens these days are under tremendous pressure. it's not that different from earlier generations except then, the pressure on them was to NOT have sex. Today, there is a lot of peer pressure (believe it or not parents!) to have sex. Your friend's attitude speaks volumes. As well, there are the well known pressures from all the media to be sexual. Even "Tweens" are directly targeted by advertising and the TV shows ads support, urging them to be sexy, pretty and hedonistic (even though they wouldn't know the meaning of hedonistic!). There is another aspect to this that I've sensed among some teens. Sex is no longer - to a degree that varies from person to person - ideally for intimacy between deeply committed people. It is a commodity, like toothpaste, like liquor, like cars, like drugs. It feels good, so do it. (This started with my generation, the last of the hippies, I think). And this is what TV and movies teach them. Yup- they learn this, and it isn't from parents (except maybe some old hippies,lol). There are, of course, consequences to this. A recent (released March 2008 I think) study by CDC, Centers for Disease Control, showed that 1 in 4 American girls had some kind of sexually transmitted disease.This isn't to "brand" girls- most of them got it with guys. Why so high? IMO, there are two reasons. One is that many STDs, like Chlamydia for instance, show no or minor symptoms. The other reason is that many younger teens especially ( beyond the peer pressure) believe (have been told by their so-called friends) that oral sex is not "real" sex and that it's safe. of course there is no risk of pregnancy but many STDs can get transmitted by oral sex too. |
